The Mainstreaming of Vegan Diets

Once the purview of a small group of devotees, more people -- including nutritionists -- are embracing plant-based eating plans

TUESDAY, Dec. 27 (HealthDay News) -- Vegan diets are considered by some to be extreme, a strict way of eating that exists on the radical fringes of vegetarianism.
But today, a growing number of people are giving vegan diets a second look, and nutritionists now believe that a well-thought-out vegan eating plan could be the most healthy way to live for most people.

Giving babies salty food may create a lifelong preference
Diets including crackers, cereals and other high-sodium solid foods are linked to a greater fondness for salt, a study finds.

Feeding young babies solid foods such as crackers, cereals and bread, which tend to be high in salt, may set them up for a lifelong preference for salt, researchers reported Tuesday.

The study, published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, suggests that efforts to reduce salt intake among Americans should begin early in life.

Nutrition a key element in fighting autoimmune diseases

"The same diet recommended for the prevention of heart disease, stroke, diabetes, and other chronic illness--one rich in plants and low in animal fats and highly-processed foods--is the same one recommended to reduce the risk of autoimmune disease and manage an existing one. Look to foods that help prevent oxidation and inflammation."

Stroke Risk Driven By Diet Quality And Overeating, Rather Than Individual Nutrients

"A review published in the special strokeissue of The Lancet Neurology says that many of the numerous studies on stroke prevention have been based on unreliable evidence. The same applies to headlines that have highlighted potential benefits of specific nutrients and foods. According to researchers, the risk of stroke is more likely to be predicted by dietary patterns and excess energy intake, i.e. overeating."

Just Released Diet Guidelines

Below is the just released Diet Guidelines for Australians. A variety of vegetables, fruit and whole grains are on the increase. Unfortunately, they also recommend an increase in the consumption of dairy. I will have to speak with them about that one!

So meat, salty and sweet things are on the decline as are saturated fat and trans fats. At last the demonisation of fat is on the decline! We need good fats to be healthy and they come from plants (avocado, nuts and seeds etc). Fat, per se, does not make you fat. It depends on the type of fat.

There is also the recognition that diet affects obesity and chronic disease.

"Based on the evidence reviewed, key recommendations of the Guidelines include:

People should eat a variety of nutritious food; advice that has not changed over many years, but is now reinforced with stronger scientific evidence.
Most Australians need to increase our intake of vegetables, fruit, whole grain cereal foods, and milk products- particularly reduced fat varieties.
Some population groups need to eat more of some food groups and less of others. For example, some women who consume an omnivore diet may benefit from eating more red meat, while some adult males may need to reduce their consumption.
Most Australians may benefit from reducing excessive intake of energy-dense nutrient-poor foods and drinks which are high in saturated fat, salt and added sugar, particularly sugar sweetened drinks, if we are to tackle obesity and diet-related chronic disease"

“The China Study” (book) and “Forks over Knives” (dvd and book)

The China Study shows us that people who consume a lot of animal protein suffer from chronic diseases later in life. Those who consume mainly plant protein do not. A wide variety of whole plants provide us with all the nutrients we need except for one. Vitamin B12 used to be available in the bacteria found on dirty vegetables. We now have a tendency to clean our vegetables so well that they no longer contain the bacteria which use to provide us with vitamin B12. It can be acquired through a supplement.

“Forks over Knives” examines the profound claim that most, if not all, of the degenerative diseases that afflict us can be controlled, or even reversed, by rejecting animal-based and processed foods.” http://www.forksoverknives.com/

The China Study by T. Collin Campbell PhD with Thomas Campbell II, MD

Please note if buying from Amazon you may be sent the Region 1 version. You will need to play this on your computer as your normal DVD/TV player may refuse as Australia is Region 4.

Mercury (destroys brain cells – Google – Minamata Disease)

“Pregnant women, women planning pregnancy and young children should limit their intake of shark (flake), broadbill, marlin and swordfish to no more than one serve per fortnight with no other fish to be consumed during that fortnight. For orange roughy (also sold as sea perch) and catfish, the advice is to consume no more than one serve per week, with no other fish being consumed during that week. “ as at September 2011, see the link below.

Also watch the documentary “The Cove” http://www.thecovemovie.com.au/ which exposes the capture and slaughter of  thousands of dolphins per year by some Japanese fishermen. The slaughtered dolphins are being sold as whale meat. This meat is contaminated with mercury. Several Japanese scientists who discovered this no longer eat sushi. Ask your dentist not to use Amalgam to fill your teeth. When your old fillings are removed make sure they use a dam to prevent you from swallowing any of the mercury.

Mercury is extremely dangerous, even in very small quantities, as it destroys brain cells.

Salt – Sodium Chloride – NaCl – Sodium

Excess salt is one cause of high blood pressure. When buying processed foods make sure the salt level is less than 120mg per 100g. Unfortunately, this would eliminate most if not all processed foods from your diet. Eating fresh food is best so take control of what you eat and cook it yourself.

Milk and Dairy Products (Liquid Meat)

Why consume the milk of another species? Milk is the perfect food for calves but not for humans.

Milk's calcium is used to negate the acidity caused by the milk's animal protein. Not enough calcium? Then the body uses your bones and your teeth's calcium. Milk does not prevent brittle bones it causes them.

Milk contains growth hormones from the mother cow intend for her calf and also from what the farmer has injected. These growth hormones encourage cancers to grow in our bodies. Milk is made from the blood of the cow. It contains white blood cells to enhance the immune system of her calf. These white blood cells do not help us at all and, in fact, are pus cells. Why are you drinking pus?

Lactose is the sugar in milk. Babies need an enzyme to help digest lactose. Around the age of 2 to 5 years, most babies have lost the ability to produce this enzyme and this is an indication that the babies should have been weaned. Lactose intolerance is normal for everyone above the age of 5 years.

The Milk Documentary: Got the Facts on Milk? DVD Released 31/8/2011. This DVD can be purchased from amazon.com, is region-less and can be played on any DVD player.

Sugar

Sugar contains 50% Glucose and 50% Fructose. The Glucose is Ok but too much of it causes Type 2 Diabetes. Fructose is converted in to Fat and really bad Cholesterol. The typical Western diet has far too much sugar to be healthy. Eliminate sugar from your diet and only consume it through natural whole foods such as fruit. You will lose weight and your cholesterol will fall. Eat avocadoes to increase your good cholesterol levels. Do not use artificial sweeteners. Sugar is addictive and it turns off your ability to say “I have had enough to eat”, so you eat more and more. Check the side panel of processed foods for sugar content. It will shock you.
